Together with Ephraim and Friends Foundation, a Ghana-based NGO working in remote island communities along the Volta Lake, Social Income supports residents facing both extreme poverty and the effects of climate change. These island communities are among the hardest to reach and the most vulnerable to rising water levels, limited infrastructure, and economic isolation.
Ghana sits on the West African coast, home to around 33 million people speaking Twi as the most common language alongside English. Founded as the Gold Coast under British rule, it gained independence in 1957 as the first sub-Saharan African country to do so, then navigated a series of coups before returning to stable democratic governance in the 1990s. Today roughly a third of Ghanaians still live in poverty, despite the country's oil wealth and one of the continent's more stable economies.
