EUR 40,000 will provide a three-year basic income for around 40 members of United Polio Brothers and Sisters (UPBSA) in Sierra Leone.
This year I turn 40, and I feel incredibly grateful to have lived 40 years in a pretty comfortable life. That’s why I would love to celebrate this milestone with a clear goal: to support 40 people who weren’t as lucky as I am. What I really want is to turn this birthday — and the year ahead — into something meaningful, something that lasts longer than a celebration. In 2024, during my volunteer trip to Sierra Leone, I visited United Polio Brothers and Sisters. There, I met a girl named Agnes, and I promised her I would do something when I came back to Europe. This fundraiser is my way of keeping that promise. Please share this campaign with your network. Together, we can make a real difference.
This campaign supports United Polio Brothers and Sisters, in partnership with Social Income. Through Social Income, people affected by polio and other disabilities receive unconditional monthly cash transfers, sent directly to their mobile phones. This means freedom, dignity, and the power to decide what they need most — whether it’s food, healthcare, school fees, or starting a small business. During my visit to UPBSA’s workshop in Freetown, I saw how they create jobs and opportunities for members who regularly face discrimination and prejudice. I also visited the nearby compound where many families live together in a small, overcrowded space, sharing one bathroom among more than 90 people, under hygienic conditions that are far from adequate. While UPBSA is planning to relocate to another area with the support of the city council, many challenges remain — not least the danger of living so close to a fuel depot.
